This small religious-based organization in Athens is a great example of engaging the local community both as service recipients, donors and volunteers. Oasis offers after-school tutoring to over 100 children (mostly Hispanic) whose parents are unable to assist them with homework due to their limited knowledge of English and low literacy level.
Additionally, “OASIS” distributes food, clothing, kitchenware and gently used items to the most needed. They offer mass in Spanish, host traditional celebrations and provide UGA students with an opportunity to gain cultural awareness while committing to volunteering one day a week for 2-3 hours.
“OASIS” leverages social media at its best, with a closed group in Facebook to facilitate communication between staff and volunteers and running a very successful carpool program for tutors
“OASIS” is a place where English-speaking and Spanish-speaking cultures connect and enrich each other. They build community, solidarity and celebrate life.
