September 15th, 2025 | Atlanta residents gather at Historic Fourth Ward Park to say: “Estamos Aqui.” We are Here

On Saturday afternoon, drums boomed as a ten-person troupe danced across Historic Fourth Ward Park, their boots and ankles dangling with dried shells. The dancers were performing a danza chichimeca, which comes from Mexican and Aztec cultures; the dried shells were from a seed pod native to Central America. They bounced to the sides, taking two steps and lifting one of their legs to make a rhythmic sound with the shells, and repeating the movement to the other side while the feathers of their colorful outfits followed them. Each move of the dance was an offering to a different god, explained lead dancer César Martínez, including the gods of rain, fire, and deer. To the other side of the outdoor theatre, sitting on the stands, hundreds of people were glued watching the unique performance.
