Families of migrant farmworkers visited the Georgia Capitol to challenge lawmakers amid the state’s escalating immigration crackdown. Dozens of students during Farmworkers Awareness Week petitioned lawmakers to protect farmers behind the state’s food supply. State lawmakers have proposed measures that increase penalties for undocumented workers and employers. Advocates warn that targeting immigrant labor could strain Georgia’s $74 billion agricultural industry. This while Governor Kemp’s office announced support for training state officers to help ICE deportations, calling it a “common sense measure” to deter uncontrolled immigration.

Each year, to kick off Farm Worker Awareness Week, farm-working students and community members from South Georgia visit the state capitol to learn about the legislative process and meet with elected officials. Before the event, our dedicated South Georgia team provides training on topics such as voter registration, the legislative process, identifying representatives, and effectively communicating priorities.

Every year at the end of March, Farmworker Awareness Week brings nationwide demonstrations and calls to protect agricultural laborers from abuse and exploitation.

In Georgia, over 100 farmworkers and college-age children of farmworkers will meet with lawmakers at the Georgia State Capitol on Friday, unofficially ushering in the start of Farmworker Awareness Week four days later.

En una jornada llena de inspiración y colaboración, el Día Latino en el Capitolio celebró su tercera edición anual en la que más de 20 organizaciones comunitarias y más de 300 personas se unieron para reconocer las contribuciones culturales, los logros y la creciente influencia de los latinos en el estado de Georgia.
El evento, organizado por el Latino Community Fund (LCF Georgia) y GALEO, reunió a un diverso grupo de asistentes que incluyó a
representantes de organizaciones miembro, empresas locales, líderes comunitarios y medios de comunicación. Además, varios funcionarios
públicos, tanto estatales como locales, participaron activamente, entre ellos, los senadores Reshaun Kemp y Jason Esteves, el representante
Phil Olaleye, la concejal de Hiram Melissa Bayardelle y la alcaldesa pro tempore de South Fulton, Linda Pritchett.

Over 200 people and 24 organizations gathered at the Georgia Capitol today for Latino Day – an annual gathering where community members come together to learn about the legislative process.

This year, in light of the recent ICE arrests that have rattled many communities, immigrant advocates and elected officials shared messages of empowerment.

Separate Latino Days at state Capitol with dueling takes on state, national immigration crackdowns

Separate Latino Day celebrations took place at the state Capitol this week, with Georgia political factions voicing differing stances on Trump’s controversial deportation plans. The issue of immigration policy continues to simmer in the Georgia Legislature, with several immigration-related bills filed since the session started in mid-January.

Daniela Rodriguez, executive director of Migrant Equity Southeast, spoke about the challenges faced by Latino communities, including fear of ICE raids and other immigration crackdowns she says are unfair. She was one of the guest speakers at Wednesday’s third annual Latino Day event at the state Capitol organized by the Latino Community Fund Georgia, the Georgia Association of Latino Elected Officials and 14 local organizations.

Arrests by immigration agents that started Sunday in Atlanta and other cities around the country have driven uncertainty and concerns for some businesses, workersand community leaders.

Some workers, even if they are legally authorized to work in the United States, are worried about the possibility of being swept up in Immigration and Customs Enforcement arrests targeting others at their workplace. Businesses in certain industries are also concerned about how their workforce could be affected, the possibility of absenteeism and longer-term staff shortages as a result.

 All but nine members of the U.S. Senate voted Thursday to move forward on legislation that would allow law enforcement agencies to detain undocumented immigrants accused of nonviolent crimes like burglary or theft.

Named for Laken Riley, the 22-year-old nursing student killed last year on the University of Georgia’s campus, the legislation is a priority for Republicans hoping to make good on President-elect Donald Trump’s campaign promises to curb immigration.

The Georgia Department of Agriculture said avian influenza breached the first commercial poultry operation in the state, confirming the diagnosis late Friday. About 45,000 broiler breeders were on the site and being destroyed.

Gilda Pedraza, executive director of the Latino Community Fund of Georgia, said Tuesday her organization sprang into action to help protect poultry workers.
