Portraits with Purpose

We are so happy and proud to congratulate Yehimi Cambron as Grand Winner of the video contest “Portratis with Purpose: Immigrant and Refugee Youth in the U.S. South” via Grantmakers Concerned with Immigrants and Refugees (GCIR)

Yehimi is an accomplished artist and a a 2014 graduate from Agnes Scott College.   She did not know she was undocumented until she was denied a prize for an art contest at age 15.

Her short video series called “Monumentos” was created to monumentalize the sacrifices and struggles of undocumented immigrants. These short films are portraits that juxtapose the highly politicized immigration debate with stories shared by Yehimi’s father and brother during intimate interviews. At a time where undocumented immigrants are so often criminalized, Yehimi intends for the vulnerability of these stories to honor their humanity and dignity.
