Pamela Barba is a fierce Latina with one goal: Reduce the wage gap for Latinas.
A graduate of Georgia State with a BFA in Graphic Design, Pamela has explored roles within the education, entertainment, nonprofit and tech worlds. She has worked for Turner Broadcasting, Dragon Army, Georgia State University, and The Southern Education Foundation and unlike other groups, this is not something she does in her “FREE” time to make money. She actually quit her job over a year and a half to dedicate herself fully to “Vamos Ladies” a professional community of Latina millennials.
When Pamela decided to enter the social entrepreneurship world, she had 3 goals:
- To create a job for myself that purposefully uses my skills to make the world better
- To find a sweet spot in the intersection of business, tech, and social justice
- To make an impact in the world
The problem:
Latinx are the fastest growing minority group in the country, yet our income continues to be the lowest of all demographics. The Latina population experiences the largest wage gap at 54 cents to the dollar.
Vamos Ladies:
A professional community for Latina millennials, Vamos Ladies offers support, education and connection opportunities through online and in-person events. The goal is simple: Help Latinas earn more money and build thriving lives.
Methods:
One thing that makes “Vamos Ladies” unique, is its scientific approach to the project, through “Lean Start-Up” and design research methods, Pamela has been learning about what is important to Latina millennials and how she can better serve them.
An initial survey of over 150 women (30 – 60 minutes phone interviews) to better understand needs has been done identifying wants, needs, and pain points. A number of hypothesis and websites are being tested as the community of already 1,700 Latinas keeps growing.
Pamela is also educating herself as part of the Digital Undivided’s competitive incubator for Black + Latinx women and has completed Plywood Peoples’ programs and had the opportunity to pitch in front of 1000+ people at Plywood Presents 2018.
Clearly, a “woman of action” we are excited to see Pamela and “Vamos Ladies” grow and develop and increase wealth in our families.
